Mayrhofen - Austria

In the wide Zillertal Valley, an hours’ drive from the Austrian city of Innsbruck, Mayrhofen is the ideal destination for skiers on a budget and those seeking good skiing coupled with a lively apres-ski. With low-cost airlines serving Innsbruck coupled with a large range of budget to mid-priced accommodation, you can holiday here cheaply and easily

Mayrhofen view by nightThe town of Mayrhofen (pronounced Mehr-hofen) is modern and lively year round and retains a relatively traditional feel of a farming town. On the sides of the valley are the Ahorn and Penken mountains, which are both accessible from the centre of town. The landscape offers an abundance of trees and cute mountain huts where you can enjoy a wiener schnitzel and germknudel.

Austria is renowned for raucous après-ski and Mayrhofen is no exception with bars around town reverberating with euro chart cheesy beats as skiers come off the mountain to drink schnapps and dance.

The ski area is divided into the two – the main Penken area on one side of the valley and on the other, the Ahorn, a sunny area that runs down to the town. With 157km of pistes to explore, the terrain on both sides of the valley caters for all levels from the cruisy blues on Ahorn to a well-respected Penken snowpark. With well-groomed pistes and plenty of snowmaking, the standard of the pistes is good and whilst the Penken ski area is not ski in, ski out, the gondola access is fast, if crowded at peak times.
