Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Obergurgl - Austria

Obergurgl‘s excellent snow record gives it one of the longest seasons in the Alps. Sitting above the tree line, it can appear a little bleak but the village itself is pretty enough with lifts situated centrally.

The new gondola to Hochgurgl, means it can now boast over 100km of runs. The resort is best for beginners and lower intermediates and is a popular choice with families. The nightlife reflects this and it tends not to be a late night resort. Most of the bars and restaurants are attached to the resort’s hotels.

As one of the highest resorts in Austria at 1930m Obergurgl offers an extremely long season from November to May thanks to its excellent snow record. Most skiing takes place above the tree-line and at times can be bleak with few sheltered slopes.

Best for beginners and early intermediates, the lift queues are generally short and good piste maintenance make this an easier place to learn than some other Austrian resorts.  As confidence grows, there’s the opportunity to go further afield to Hochgurgl, a gondola ride away and offering a large area of easy runs. Better boarders and skiers could be easily frustrated although there is usually good off-piste and powder and guided tours can take you down to Solden (not lift-linked).

The resort itself has a traditional feel but the lifts are conveniently located in the village centre. Accommodation is mostly hotel-centric, as are the restaurants and indoor leisure activities. Après ski tends to be lively at tea time in the bars and eateries around the village with visitors returning back to their accommodation early in the evening. Obergurgl is a popular choice with families and it tends not to be a late night resort. Most of the bars and restaurants are attached to the resort’s hotels making it less rowdy than you might be used to.
