Flights

Schladming is located close to four airports, making it easily accessible. Salzburg International is the closest airport to Schladming; from here there are regular transfers into the city. Numerous trains and buses go direct from these cities to Schaldming.

One of the things to look out for is that quite often, the cheaper the airline, the more complicated and expensive their baggage policy is. This can make carrying skis or snowboards to your destination costly if you are not prepared.

Trains

Trains are an easy and an eco-friendly way of travelling down to the Alps. The European rail network is efficient, affordable and comfortable. The Eurostar leaves Waterloo station daily for Paris; from gare de l'Est in the French capital, you can take an overnight train to Munich, and join following connections to Schaldming. From Munich, travel with a regular Eurocity train to Salzburg, then change for Schladming; both trains take one hour, 30 minutes.

Transfers

Bus transfers are the most economical way to travel to resort from the airport or train station. If possible, try to book your tickets well in advance - the buses can get very busy and some companies act on a reservation-only basis.

A flexible option is to fly to one of the airports and hire a car to complete the journey to Schaldming. Just remember to ask for snow chains when booking.

For door-to-door, taxis are a good option, although not the cheapest.

Self-drive

By car, you should allow two days to get to Schladming, which is 1200kms from Calais. Once in Salzburg, head for the resort (90kms away), by going south on the A-10 autobahn from Salzburg, exiting at junction 63 on route E-651/B-99. From Munich Airport, take autobahns A-9, A-99 (bypass), A-8 and A-10 from Salzburg, and then exit on to the B-99, as above (260kms). For driving trips try the RAC or Driving Abroad websites. Always remember to carry snow chains.
