North America's largest ski resort, Whistler has something for just about everyone. Every morning diehard powder hounds lineup alongside visitors from around the world for the first shot at carving virgin turns in the sweeping bowls of the high mountains. With the largest skiable terrain in North America there is a trail for every level of skier.
Whistler's season starts early in November and runs until June. The pedestrian-only village bustles all winter long, swelling over Christmas and New Year when it's standing room only in bars and clubs. At the same time, there are plenty of spots just to relax and enjoy the Canadian wilderness just outside town. Each winter more and more British skiers are choosing Whistler over closer European resorts - the longer journey being repaid with consistent snowfall, extensive terrain and the legendary nightlife.
Whistler attracts some of the world's best skiers, however there is a welcoming atmosphere for all, the locals are very proud of their resort and more than happy to give advice and tips to visitors.
There are a few other differences you will notice - lessons from a friendly english-speaking instructor and a favourable exchange rate for your holiday money. There is a good mix of restaurants, from a typical line up of North American steak and burger places to a range of Asian restaurants, fine French cuisine or local West Coast dishes.
Whistler Village is the central point and home to most restaurants and shops, as well as the main lift area - Skiers Plaza. A few minutes away Upper Village, at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, is quieter with mostly upmarket hotels. Village North is set apart from the base of the mountains, but most hotels are less than 15 minutes walk from the main lifts. Creekside is a satellite village 15 minutes by bus from the main village, however this distance is reflected in lower hotel prices. Creekside has a convenient gondola to access Whistler Mountain but is not ideal for anyone wanting to ski both mountains. Ski school has centres at Creekside, Blackcomb and in Whistler Village for adults and children.
