Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Val Thorens - France

The imposing tower blocks epitomise this French ‘mega-resort on the mountain’ with a year round snow guarantee due to the base altitude of the ‘village’ at 2300m and summer glacier skiing to an ear-drum popping 3230m.

Sitting above the tree line, what ‘Val T’ lacks in Alpine beauty it more than makes up for in functionality with much of the accommodation ski in, ski out. With lift pass access to the Trois Vallees, even the keenest skier will struggle to take every lift available during a visit, and for those looking beyond the lifts, quality off piste opportunities abound. This is the best base to explore the ‘fourth valley’ with its excellent off-piste.
Amenities in the resort itself have expanded and developed recently to be friendlier to the non-skier with a wide range of restaurants from local Savoyard to Mexican. Many of the higher end hotels have swimming and spa facilities whilst a sports centre offer non-skiing options for non-skiers.

The exhilarating four mile toboggan run also provides an interesting, non-skiing diversion but make no mistake, Val Thorens is a purpose built, skiers resort.
