Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Sauze d'Oulx - Italy

Sauze d'Oulx (pronounced 'Sau-zee doox) is a lively village with extensive, un-crowded slopes perfect for the intermediate skier or snowboarder. The more advanced can easily link up to other Milky Way resorts such as Sestriere, the black runs at the top of Mount Motta and Mount Sises or the World Cup Kandahar Slalom and Kandahar Barchetta runs.

Despite being known as Ibiza-on-snow during the 80’s, Sauze has worked hard to shift its boisterous image and today offers lively après-ski with a host of pubs, cocktail bars and reasonably-priced restaurants and pizzerias. Starting early and finishing late, the possibilities for non-stop nightlife in Sauze are many and varied. Competitively priced, easily accessible, with a better than average sunshine record and English widely spoken, why go anywhere else?

Well, on the downside, while the resort is modern and inconspicuous, what’s obvious is the lack of investment: the lifts are not centrally located, the ski buses are expensive and infrequent and with acutely unreliable natural snow, Sauze d’Oulx needs to resolve these issues and make the amenities comparable to other key European resorts. That said, if you’re largely after après fun, Sauze will not disappoint.
