Chanel skisCheck out Chanel's new skis and snowboard. There's just one option of each, and apparently both are for "any level of skier", which should raise suspicions from the off with any beginner who's ever skied on a pair of advanced skis. Still, there's a big Chanel logo, or 'signature' as they call it, and that is the whole point, of course.

Reckon ski racing isn't scary enough already? Trust Swedish freeskier Jon Olsson to raise the stakes by sending three skiers down a course with mere inches between them.

Jon, inventor of heaps of crazy flips in the park and pipe and holder of nine X-Games medals, took up ski racing again a few years ago, but is clearly giving it his own twist of danger.

The first solar powered ski lift is to be unveiled in Tenna, a tiny ski resort in Switzerland.  There are just 110 inhabitants of this tiny village, however they are forging forward with their 'green' optio.

The solar panels are adapted so they can be moved to shift any settling snow and any excess power generated will be sold to the national grid. Sounds great, let's just hope that on cloudy days you don't get stuck half way up!  Surely though the Swiss will have thought of that...

Birthdays.  Mine falls on April Fools.  You can imagine the litany of jokes and tricks I had to endure in my younger years.  'To be honest it's quite fitting', I am told by those who get to know me before they know my birth date.  I can not help but agree.

Pipers piping235 chilly people with 470 chilly legs spent Saturday morning standing in line on CairnGorm Mountain, near Aviemore, wearing kilts.
They had cobbled together some reasons to do this, namely in order to set a record, and to raise some money for charity (Maggie's Highlands Cancer Care Centres and the Badenoch And Strathspey Schools' Snowsports Association).

Tired of all the usual resorts? Looking for a more laid back experience? Then look no further than Sud Tirol. This lovely corner of Italy used to be Austrian and you can still see the influence in the food and also that fact that every town has both an Italian and an Austrian name. The signs are a bit confusing to start with but you soon get used to it.

Getting to Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is always going to be a faff. Of course, if you have time, a faff is exactly what you want. It's while faffing that you meet people and see all the weird signs, bits of tat, delicious and suspicious food - essentially stumble around in the detail - of another country. Why do people travel if not to make life harder for themselves? More difficult, more rewarding, more surprising.
